Who knew there could be such a simple solution to me feeling down and gloomy and overwhelmed? I certainly didn’t, although after all these years I really should have done.
Yup, the film from 2001 starring Reese Witherspoon. I’ve always loved this film and I’ve seen it oh so many times, but when I decided to put it on tonight, I got a whole new experience from it. Maybe it’s because of my current state of mind, but it suddenly dawned on me what a masterpiece it is.
Yes, it takes the dumb blonde stereotype and runs wild with it, but if you look past it (heck, you don’t even have to do that as it’s so brilliantly overdone, it’s amazing), it’s a story about how you don’t have to put other people down to lift yourself up. You’re nice to your ex-boyfriend’s fiancee because you really do think her outfit is cute and why not share it with her? Make nice not gossip.
Moreover it’s a story about staying true to who you are and achieving whatever you set your mind to, as long as you work hard for it. Yes, if you put the work in you can go to Harvard, if you wish. And no, you don’t have to dye your hair icky brown colour and dress up as a frigid bitch to do it.
And apparently that’s exactly what I needed in my life right now. So uplifting! Thank you.
